An eye test chart is a chart used to measure visual acuity. Eye test charts are often used by medical professionals, such as doctors or nurses, to screen individuals for visual impairment. Ophthalmologists, doctors who specialize in the treatment of eyes, also use eye test charts to monitor a patient's visual acuity in response to various treatments, such as medications or surgery.
When taking an eye test, an eye test chart is placed at a standard distance from the subject. The subject then attempts to identify the symbols on the chart, starting with larger symbols and then moving to smaller and smaller symbols until they can no longer identify the symbols. The smallest symbol that can be reliably identified is considered the person's visual acuity.
The Snellen chart is the most commonly used. Other types of eye test charts include logMAR charts, Landolt C, E charts, Leo test, Golovin-Siftsev chart, Rosenbaum chart, and Jaeger chart.
